In my sermon on February 17 ("Jesus the Transformer"), I mentioned the idea of adopting a school. Just wanted you to know that wasn't an original idea. There are a number of parachurch organizations, such as Tony Evans' Urban Alternative and Buckner Baptist Benevolences, that have developed school adoption programs. I believe this could be the perfect way for Westbury to begin reaching out to our community in an ongoing local mission effort. I say begin because I think such a strategy will lead to other ideas as we get involved in the lives of kids in a nearby school.
Wednesday, March 5, Mission Houston will be holding a luncheon to discuss a program called Whole and Healthy Children...a school adoption plan. I plan to go, along with Brandon Webb, the staff leader of our Missions Committee. If any of you are interested in the luncheon, or in learning more about the program, here's a link:

I am excited about what God can do through us as we show Christ's love to families in our community. I'll let you know what I find out...

Let me do some checking and find out for you.
I just reviewed the MissionHouston website and was impressed with not only their vision but also their chose of Scriptures used as the foundation of their work. One of the Scriptures was Psalms 133 which we studied last week in the Beth Moore study "Stepping Up--a journey through the Psalms of Ascent" through our Heart To Hand group. Isn't it amazing how God brings together different experiences to help us see His Hand at work?! In this study Beth spoke of the unity of God's people, despite all of our individual and cultural
differences. She has a great quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer: "Not what a man is in himself as a Christian, his spirituality and piety, constitutes the basis of our community. What determines our brotherhood is what that man is by reason of Christ. Our community with one another consists solely in what Christ has done to both of us." So, whether this particular project is the one God has chosen for WBC remains to be seen but I feel His message is that we have to look outside ourselves.
